Townsend’s Plastic Market Monthly Polystyrene benchmark saw US Polystyrene (PS) contracts for many buyers increasing by as much as 3.0 cents-per-pound (cpp) for a second consecutive month, fueled by a slight uptick in demand and modest increases in feedstocks benzene and styrene.

In Townsend’s survey of buyers, the volume-weighted average (VWA) price for Crystal grades rose 0.6 cpp while HIPS grades saw an increase of 0.3 cpp.  PS resin deliveries in January pulled about 1.14% ahead of deliveries in December, indicating some re-stocking may have taken place, and processors held their inventories at about 17 days of supply on hand.

Three PS producers announced price increases for February following the modest increase in February benzene contracts. Americas Styrenics announced a 3.0cpp increase to be effective February 1st. Ineos Styrolution is also seeking a 3.0 cpp increase for February citing higher energy and benzene costs. Priam Polymers is also raising the prices of all crystal PS products by 3.0 cpp in February.  Given the small uptick in February benzene contracts, buyers are expected to push back hard on the increases.

Sources report that PS saw modest demand growth in 2025 for some sectors such building/construction and electronics/electrical with the strongest growth seen in the building/construction sector mainly due to the use of expanded polystyrene (EPS) as a building product. More modest growth occurred in 2025 in the electric/electronics segment. This same source observed that the growth in building/construction is still not enough to fully offset the downward pressure resulting from the declines in packaging and single-use applications, which form the largest share of PS consumption.  Looking at a potential bright spot for 2026, a market source mentioned that a temporary increase in the use of PS, especially for insulated cups and take-out food containers, could materialize during the FIFA World Cup that will be held at different sites in North America from June 11 through July 19.
