CIOPC 2017:  Inaugural Event Draws 300+ Attendees

Technology Innovation Key Driver in Olefins & Polyolefins Sustainability

Co-hosted by the Chemical Industry and Engineering Society of China (CIESC) and Townsend Solutions, the 2017 China International Olefin and Polyolefin Conference (CIOPC) took place in Ningbo, China this past March.   This inaugural international event attracted over 300 participants from 12 countries, representing stakeholders throughout the value chain including ExxonMobil, Dow, LyondellBasell, Albemarle, Kingfa Scientific and Technological Co., MCN Material Technologies, Tosoh FineChem, SABIC,  Ningbo University of Technology, SINOPEC, PetroChina, Inha University, Toho Titanium, Zhejiang University, Chinese Academy of Sciences, SINOPEC BRICI, SINOPEC SRICI, Hanwha Total, Tecnimont in Italy, Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, China Coal, CNOOC, SINOPEC Ningbo Engineering Co., Ningbo Petrochemical Economic & Technological Development Zone, APAC Pharmaceutical, Tianjin Bohai Petrochemical. etc.
 
Technology innovation as a driver of sustainability in these tumultuous times was a key theme at the conference.  Mr. Yang Yuan-I, Vice Chairman and Secretary General of CIESC opened the event, commenting that “olefins and polyolefins are two strategically important segments for global petrochemical industry.  The industry is now facing the uncertainties of crude oil price, new feedstock routes, and an oversupply of commodity resins in China.  It is clear that technology innovation is becoming the key factor for sustainability.”
 
Dr. Clifford Lee, Vice President Technology of Townsend Solutions and the co-host of the conference, shared his views with the audience.  He commented that “in the past 10 years China has achieved unprecedented success as a leading producer of olefin and polyolefin.  However, the supply/demand situation is now experiencing an upheaval due to the convoluted global oil price changes coupled with an array of new feedstock technologies including shale gas in America, direct conversions from methane to olefins, etc.”  Dr. Lee emphasized that “at this juncture it is necessary to not only develop the best technologies in olefins and polyolefins, but also at the same time to conduct more effective integration of upstream technologies with more profitable downstream market/product operations.  China is in urgent need to move from a commodity resin powerhouse to becoming a supplier of high-end differentiated products with value-added innovative applications.”  Dr. Lee believes the forum provided by the annual CIOPC will serve as the “catalyst” for the transformation.
